A DRAMA SCHOOL FOR EVERYONE

The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy prides itself on being a

wide community-based drama school in Sussex. With its unique curriculum, the Academy aims to develop confidence, self-esteem and communication skills across the 5 to 17 age range.

The success of this organisation, which has over 250 students, comes from the strong belief in nurturing the innate talents of all its students, using experienced, fully qualified, DBS checked and vetted teachers. All the Academy’s teachers undergo extensive training in the Helen O’Grady curriculum and teaching methods to ensure each student is encouraged in a warm, positive learning environment. Students can progress through the Academy from 5 to 18 years without ever repeating a lesson.

The drama programme caters for three age-groups:

Lower Primary Classes (5-8 years)

Highly active lessons, using a wide range of creative exercises such as speech, movement, Mimes to Music, improvisation, snippets and scene starters, develop children’s skills to be participants in all aspects of their lives. Through this, students are encouraged to ask questions, seek answers and share information with others. Dress up days, along with the use of props and make up, add an extra dimension and excitement to these fast-paced, exhilarating classes.

Upper Primary Classes (9-11 years)

Students are given many opportunities to act out a great variety of situations in a fun-filled atmosphere. They are encouraged to quickly learn how to accept new challenges and explore new directions. All these aspects enrich the lives of students and contribute to their personal growth as they learn to take on and enact convincing characters, sustain believable plots and express themselves appropriately and confidently.

Youth Theatre (12- 17 years)

The Youth Theatre covers a dynamic and comprehensive theatre-arts programme. It attracts a wide range of young people, from those seeking to increase their confidence and speaking ability, to those hoping to pursue acting as a career.

All students attend a one-hour lesson, each week of the school year.  In the summer term all the students begin rehearsing a scripted play, devised for their particular age-group, which is performed to a public audience. This is the highlight of the Academy’s year and reflects the talents and the skills of the students and their teachers.

The Helen O’Grady Sussex Drama Academy currently operates a number of studios in Leicester.
